What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence (EI), or Emotional Quotient (EQ) as it is sometimes referred to, is a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain social relationships, cope with challenges, and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way; However, unlike it’s counterpart, Intelligence Quotient (IQ), it can be substantially strengthened and developed.

After it’s initial release in 1994, the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i), has utilized over 20 years of research to develop the EQ-i 2.0®. This updated version of the Emotional Intelligence model was based on extensive feedback, updated norms and rigorous reliability and validity studies.

The EQ-i is an online tool which utilizes 133 items and focuses on 15 subscales within 5 main composite areas in order to provide the ability to measure distinct aspects of emotional and social functioning. There are two main assessment types included in the main EQ-i model:

  • EQ-i 2.0® is self-reporting and measures an individual’s emotional intelligence
  • EQ-i 360® is a more comprehensive report which allows participants to receive feedback from peers, managers, direct reports, and others on how they leverage their emotional intelligence

In addition, both assessment types can be conducted in one of 2 streams:

  • WORKPLACE: Used to assess anyone within the workplace
  • LEADERSHIP: Used when assessing leaders within an organization
